How to get rid of the musty mould smell for good

The smell is a symptom, not the problem

Step 1 — find the source

The smell often means hidden mould — behind walls, under floors, in a cupboard, behind furniture, or in soft furnishings like carpet. Follow your nose: it's usually strongest near the source. Check enclosed, damp and poorly ventilated spots first.

Step 2 — remove it and fix the moisture

Once found, remove the mould safely and — the crucial part — fix the moisture that caused it. As long as damp remains, mould regrows and the smell returns. Porous items that are heavily affected (carpet, soft furnishings) may need replacing.

Step 3 — air it out

With the source gone, ventilate thoroughly to clear lingering odour, and keep humidity controlled so it doesn't come back.
