Why hidden mould is common

Mould doesn't only grow where you can see it. When moisture gets into a wall cavity, behind plaster, or under a floor, mould can flourish out of sight for months. By the time it appears on the surface, it's often well established. Knowing the warning signs lets you catch it early.

The signs of mould inside a wall

Look and smell for these: a musty, earthy smell with nothing visible; damp-looking or discoloured patches that come and go; bubbling, blistering or blown plaster; wallpaper lifting at the edges; paint peeling in one area; a wall that feels cold or damp to the touch; or a corner that's always the first to show problems. Any of these suggests moisture — and where there's trapped moisture, there's usually mould.

Where it hides

The usual hiding places are external walls that get cold (condensation forms inside), around windows, behind large furniture where air can't circulate, in ground-floor and basement walls affected by rising damp, and anywhere near a past or present leak. In Cyprus, north-facing walls and sealed apartments are frequent culprits.
