Mould on carpets and rugs: can they be saved?

Small, freshly affected carpet mould caught within a day or two can sometimes be cleaned and dried, but carpet and underlay hold moisture deep down, so established or large mould usually means the carpet (and often the underlay) needs replacing — and the moisture source beneath must be found.
Why carpet mould is deceptive
What you see on the surface of a carpet is usually the least of it. Carpet, underlay and the floor beneath form layers that trap and hold moisture, so mould often grows underneath and within, out of sight. A musty smell with no obvious patch is a classic sign of hidden carpet mould.

Common causes: a spill or leak that wasn't fully dried, damp coming up through a ground floor or rising damp, condensation in a cold room, or a carpet laid over a floor that's never quite dry. After any flood or water damage, carpet is one of the first things to check.
Save it or bin it?
If a small area got wet and you dried it thoroughly within 24–48 hours, a professional clean may save it. But once mould is established, or a large area is affected, carpet and especially underlay usually can't be reliably salvaged — they hold too much moisture and mould deep down. For health reasons, err toward replacing heavily affected carpet.
Fix what's underneath
Replacing the carpet is pointless if the floor beneath stays wet — the new one will go the same way. Find and fix the moisture source first. An mould inspection measures the floor and subfloor for damp and identifies the cause, so any replacement lasts.
