Why furniture attracts mould

Mould on furniture almost always comes down to two things: humidity in the room and lack of air movement around the piece. When a wardrobe, sofa or bed sits flush against a cold external wall, air can't circulate behind it, condensation forms on the cold surface, and mould grows on the furniture and the wall alike.

The common hotspots

We see it most on the backs of wardrobes and sofas, behind headboards, on leather and fabric items, and on anything stored in a damp room or against a north-facing wall. Clothes and soft furnishings are especially vulnerable because they hold moisture. In Cyprus, coastal humidity and sealed apartments make this a year-round issue.

How to save mouldy furniture

Act quickly. Move the piece into fresh air and, if possible, sunlight. Brush off surface mould outdoors (wear a mask so you don't inhale spores). Hard surfaces can be cleaned and treated; heavily affected soft or porous items may not be salvageable. Crucially, check the wall behind — if the furniture is mouldy, the wall usually is too.

Stopping it happening again

Pull furniture a few centimetres off external walls to let air move behind it, improve room ventilation, reduce humidity, and don't pack wardrobes so full that air can't circulate. Where the wall itself is affected, it needs mould treatment or professional mould removal, and for persistently humid homes a monthly maintenance plan keeps the whole room in check.
