Why mattress mould matters more

A mattress isn't just any surface — you lie on it for a third of your life, breathing the air right above it. So while a little mould elsewhere might wait, mould on a mattress deserves prompt attention, especially for anyone with asthma or allergies.

Why it happens

Mattresses grow mould when moisture gets trapped underneath or inside: a mattress on the floor or a solid base with no airflow, a damp or cold room, sweat and humidity with no chance to dry, or a mattress against a cold external wall. It's the same condensation and airflow problem as the rest of the bedroom.

Clean or replace?

Light surface spotting caught early can sometimes be treated and thoroughly dried. But mattresses are thick and porous — mould often roots deep inside where no surface clean reaches. If it's more than superficial, keeps returning, or you can smell it, replacement is the honest answer. No one should sleep on a mould-infested mattress.

Stopping it happening again

Use a slatted base for airflow, keep the bedroom ventilated and not too humid, don't put a bed flat on the floor, and air the mattress periodically.
